Meet the Designer

A journey began years ago . . . one of curiosity which lead to knowledge: That knowledge instilled desire which produced creation. The journey has taken over 25 years, for the traveler, designer Debbie McLelland. The result-years of working with clients who were looking for “fundamentally different” art. Clients with rare vision allowing any artist the unencumbered freedom of self expression. This freedom led Debbie into a professional career in graphic design after obtaining her degree in Fine Arts where she studied drawing, pottery, watercolor and oil painting, stained glass, sculpture, and jewelry making. Never veering off her path, she continued taking classes at various art institutes, craft centers, and private instruction in the art of glass painting and bead making. She decided to officially establish her fine art base back in 1981 when she opened Ebb-Tide Creations Art Studio, a quest continued until 2003, when she began Fire Gems Studio. Always creatively consumed, living in various parts of the world like Puerto Rico, California, Louisiana, and Hawaii, she now enjoys residing in the multi-cultural city of San Antonio, Texas.

Today, if you asked her about her art, life, or recent passions, she would excitedly explain, “Fire Art.” For some time now, her artistic enthusiasm has been consumed with what she calls, her “Fire Art.” The majority of the artwork displayed on this web site contains the use of either fire, heat, or fusion. Whether Debbie is soldering together sheet glass, bevels, or jewels, melting glass chunks or rods to form beads, or fusing molten glass in her kilns, “Fire Art” is always the result!

Join Debbie as she takes you back to ancient beliefs and processes of creation used long ago. Rediscover a primitive time of artisan skills with contemporary adaptation. Enjoy the mystery and magic of “Fire Art.”

The Studio

Fire Gems Studio is located close to the heart of downtown San Antonio in a charming 1930’s restored bungalow. Clients are greeted at the entrance of a stone walkway by a splashing water fountain with a precocious little cherub snuggling his favorite sea fish. The walkway joins a garden waiting area with an abundance of stunning flowers and wind chimes. The tour continues through a New Orleans styled entrance of black wrought iron which cascades around exterior walls of lavender and cranberry. The atmosphere, structure, and gardens truly stand out, and anyone passing by must know that . . . “art is created here.”

The journey continues by sitting casually at the base of a tranquil Koi pond while enjoying gardens lush with Hawaiian tropicals like Plumeria trees, pots of Hibiscus, Ginger, and Bird of Paradise. As comments are made about the relaxing environment, inevitably the question is asked, “I would like to stay here forever, how do you do it?” While visitors view their Fire Gems purchases, we simply answer, “There are many possible reasons!”

Yes, there is a unique feeling here at Fire Gems Studio, you sense it immediately, it washes over you. Could it be the transformation that took place when ancient Feng Shui principles were applied, when the atmosphere became balanced with all aspects of nature? Perhaps it is the quietness of this old building filled with its history and secrets. Or, perhaps, the warm sense of peace comes from spirits of old creative masters that enjoy seeing their techniques brought back to life. Then there’s the story of, “The Lady in Peach,” a spiritual figure that has been seen in a flowing gown moving slowly from the art studio to the main gallery only to gently vanish. There are also those unexplained sounds in the late evening hours that evoke a sense of mischief but never fear. Whoever these gentle visitors may be, hopefully they approve of our interpretation of techniques used by artisans centuries ago. Or is it simply . . . the spirit of the designer herself? Is it Debbie's enthusiasm towards life, her determination to work in an inspiring, tranquil place, a place which allows her to create beautiful artwork that brings pleasure to others? You must come to Fire Gems Studio to find the answer.

Please Note: The studio is not open to the general public, all visits are by appointment only.
